The Low Span of High Heeled Bridges

Catching sight of the approach spans for the Kosciuszko Bridge replacement under construction, it hit home. The new bridge is going to cross the Newtown Creek at a lower altitude than the present (c. 1938) bridge. Sad to lose that magnificent, if brief (depending on traffic conditions), westward view of Manhattan--and more limited eastward one of the Newtown Industrial Valley. Enjoy it while we have it, pothole (trenches) and all.

Żywiec Nie Ma

The very large bottle of Żywiec beer on the side of the Conch Umbrella Factory in Greenpoint has come and gone a couple times. This time, they've painted over the space it held.
Here's a photograph from hoppier days (November 2015).

(Nie ma was the very first shop-Polish phrase I learned in the stark early 1990s. It means "we're out" or "we don't have it.")

Bayonne Rising

Crossing the Bayonne Bridge these days is an act of faith. The Port Authority website will let you know when it's closed, generally from 9 to 3 on weekdays, but all the signs leading up to seem to suggest you are heading off the face of the earth. Nevertheless it was open today on my way back from Jersey City.
The Navigational Clearance Project, a.k.a, "Raise the Roadway, to allow larger ships into the Port of Newark is well underway, with a completion date of 2019. The pedestrian walkway is closed for the duration.

Trailing Eva

Caught up with this moving billboard on an S93 bus on the Gowanus Expressway.
Eva la Trailera is a telenovela on Telemundo, featurinEdith González as Eva. The entry on Wikipedia is quick to point out that it is not an adaptation of Lola and the Truck Driver from 1983. Got it?
